I remember reading in the newspapers about large scale rapes and murders in Nanking. It continued day after day. I was about 12 years old then and that was a formative event in my life. I saw that the world had to be overturned in some way. Later I found out that such atrocities were committed all over occupied China. They were particularly abundant in Nanking because the Japanese troops besieging the city were told that when the city was taken they could return to Japan. This didn't happen. Instead they were told that the hateful Chinese insisted on resisting further. Therefore the Japanese soldiers could not return to their country until all of China was "pacified." The generals in charge in Nanking pretended not to see what was happening.
You won't find anything about this in Japanese history textbooks. Consequently most Japanese people don't know anything about it.
As for men-women relationships, as one Japanese friend of mine expressed it "We Japanese are one of the most modern societies for technology but one of the most backward ones for status of women." There is one notable change that I see there.
The women are now widely realizing the injustice, the unnaturalness of the situation. As a consequence a sizeable fraction of Japanese women don't want to marry. That means the birth rate will stay low. The investment connection is clear here. I always discourage posters on this thread and also my Japanese friends from investing in Japan.
