My own understanding of homosexuality from reading about it is that most gay children realize something is different when they are three or four years old. I doubt that something in the water has anything to do with it.

If Firenze is a very sexually stimulating place, it does seem logical that homosexuals would be as excited as heterosexuals, but that the object(s) of their lust would be in line with their sexual identity.

There is certainly a lot that is unknown about the causes of homosexuality. Here is a news report which mentions a seemingly reputable doctor's conclusion about gay DNA, which I had never heard before. Now the same doctor thinks there is a "God gene", so perhaps he is a bit over the top.
