I hope it is a totally different picture in four years, but I don't really think all, or even most, Americans have very many common goals, and I don't think we have the luxury of four years of rapid environmental degradation/global warming without any Republican sense that it is a crisis to be solved rather than a further invitation/opportunity to rape and pillage the earth's resources.

I know that at least three of my Democratic friends have eerily said exactly the same thing since the election--"F%&* the troops", since they and military families voted overwhelmingly for Bush, and the sentiment now is that they asked for whatever happens in Iraq/wherever Bush adventures next.

I did hear a discussion on Fox TV this morning about the debate within the Republican party, with Arlen Spector representing the fiscally sound, small government, individual liberties part of the party, and the other, more evangelical part being described as the TALEBAN WING of the party, which I thought was just amazing for Fox, and very funny. I do predict that if the right-wing Christians try to lead the party very far, that Democrats will get a lot of their lost seats back in two years, and a Democrat in the White House in 2008, or at least a moderate.
