Captain Ed on Powell - ...Washington and the media have already begun the guessing game surrounding the open position. The AP offers John Danforth as the leading candidate: Most of the speculation on a successor has centered on U.N. Ambassador John Danforth, a Republican and former U.S. senator from Missouri, and national security adviser Condoleezza Rice. I'd expect Rice to get the nod over Powell, but Danforth is an intriguing selection. He probably would sail through the confirmation process, while a Rice nomination might provide yet another platform for Democrats to demagogue on Iraq. Of course, now that the election is over, denying them that platform is less of a concern. The AP also reports that Scott McClellan expects to announce four resignations today. I suspect that the Bush Administration already has its nominees selected, just as they did with the Attorney General position.
