News Story from Japan tonite -- Ascend in Deal with Shanghai Bell (see it on www.japanbiztech.com):

Shanghai Bell Teams Up with
Ascend, Alcatel

HONG KONG -- Shanghai Bell Telephone Equipment
Manufacturing Co., Ltd. of China, Alcatel Telecom of
France and Ascend Communications Inc. of the United States have formed a partnership under which Shanghai Bell will offer Ascend and
Alcatel remote-access equipment to the Chinese market.

The partnership is expected to support several million Internet users in
China over a three-year period.

Shanghai Bell is a major manufacturer and supplier of telecommunications equipment in China, with it's primary customers
being the provincial postal and telecommunications authorities and other
government organizations.

Majority owned by the China Ministry of Post and
Telecommunications, Shanghai Bell has sales and support offices throughout China.

Under the agreement, Shanghai Bell will market, promote and support
carrier-grade access solutions for Internet applications.

These products include Alcatel's A1000ADSL and Ascend's MAX and MAX TNT WAN access switches, and the Ascend GRF family of
IP switches.

Shanghai Bell will sell these products as part of its offering of carrier
services and products, including network and service management.

Martin De Prycker, vice president of the Access Systems Division of
Alcatel, said the partnership is an important milestone in his company's
long-standing relationship with Shanghai Bell.

He said the Internet is growing rapidly in China, providing good
potential for Shanghai Bell, which already is the leader in the carrier
voice switching business.

He added that with the trend toward multimedia over IP and
high-speed services, Shanghai Bell will further strengthen its position in
the market through the synergy between the voice and data market
segments.

Curtis Sanford, senior vice president, international of Ascend
Communications, said that with the combined strength of Shanghai Bell
and Alcatel, Ascend will be able to assist China in advancing into the
information age.
