Shanghai Bell Teams Up with Ascend, Alcatel
HONG KONG -- Shanghai Bell Telephone Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. of China, Alcatel Telecom of France and Ascend Communications Inc. of the United States have formed a partnership under which Shanghai Bell will offer Ascend and Alcatel remote-access equipment to the Chinese market.
The partnership is expected to support several million Internet users in China over a three-year period.
Shanghai Bell is a major manufacturer and supplier of telecommunications equipment in China, with it's primary customers being the provincial postal and telecommunications authorities and other government organizations.
Majority owned by the China Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, Shanghai Bell has sales and support offices throughout China.
Under the agreement, Shanghai Bell will market, promote and support carrier-grade access solutions for Internet applications.
These products include Alcatel's A1000ADSL and Ascend's MAX and MAX TNT WAN access switches, and the Ascend GRF family of IP switches.
Shanghai Bell will sell these products as part of its offering of carrier services and products, including network and service management.
Martin De Prycker, vice president of the Access Systems Division of Alcatel, said the partnership is an important milestone in his company's long-standing relationship with Shanghai Bell.
He said the Internet is growing rapidly in China, providing good potential for Shanghai Bell, which already is the leader in the carrier voice switching business.
He added that with the trend toward multimedia over IP and high-speed services, Shanghai Bell will further strengthen its position in the market through the synergy between the voice and data market segments.
Curtis Sanford, senior vice president, international of Ascend Communications, said that with the combined strength of Shanghai Bell and Alcatel, Ascend will be able to assist China in advancing into the information age.
