Our first son, Brian, was born extremely premature (25 weeks gestation) in 1980, and only survived a week. He weighed 1 pound 11 ounces (765 grams). He was born at a hospital with a good neonatal intensive care unit, and was attended by very good doctors from LSU and Tulane Medical Center, so he had a chance. They did everything they could to save him, with our blessing. We were there all day, every day, until he died.

Over the past 25 years or so they've gotten better and better at saving babies like that.

This is the reason I am opposed to second trimester abortions. In one room of the hospital, the doctors are fighting around the clock to save babies like Brian, while in another room of the hospital, they are killing them.

I think that's about as sick and dysfunctional as a society can get.
