von Mises was once asked what FDR should have done to end the Depression. He replied "Nothing, but he should have started twenty years sooner".

I believe there's a wealth of wisdom behind that seemingly facile remark, and am not amenable to conspiracy theories wrt the Depression. Still, the effects were uncomfortably close to totalitarian control....
