FDR was no Communist. He was a patrician aristocrat who would have been one of the first to be shot had the Commies taken over America in the 1930s (not out of the question in the depths of the Depression). Moreover, staunchly conservative Churchill was more accommodating to Stalin's territorial ambitions than Roosevelt ever was. Wendell Wilkie, Republican candidate in 1944, was an internationalist and closer to a Commie than his opponent, FDR.

Maybe you had to be there to appreciate the depths of despair in this country in the Depression years. In truly desperate times, FDR instilled hope and confidence in the American people, and that alone qualifies him as one of our greatest presidents.
