I have a theory about the strange silence of Democratic leaders regarding major problems with the Ohio vote and other election tabulations...
I think they are using minor candidates as stalking horses. Kerry has let it be known he is interested in running again in 2008. Under this theory, if he were to start raising hell about the questionable vote counts, it would first: Be perceived as sour grapes, and second: put major egg on his face if ultimately nothing comes out that would change the election or lead to reform or prosecutions.
By letting third party candidates challenge the Ohio vote, and Nader the New Hampshire vote, Kerry can stay back, be "statesmanlike" and see if anything of real substance, and actionable ultimately comes out.
I do not agree with this strategy but that's my theory.
On another matter of media ignoring the questionable votes, the fact that NO MAJOR DEMOCRATIC LEADER has come out publicly and challenged the election plays into this. If Kerry had a news conference and laid into the problems in Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and New Mexico, they'd cover it, no doubt about it.
Olbermann (even on vacation)continues to highlight the problem, but MSNBC seems to have no real investigative efforts underway. On the other hand, if the networks to have investigative teams working the story, they certainly would not talk about it until they have something solid.
In the meantime, regional media continue to work the story. It ultimately will be interesting to see what finally happens.
