The French brought the negative impression upon themselves. Pres Bush is free to take whatever position is in the best interest of the USA towards France. If he wants to pretend we trust the French, he may do so, although it will be done with a "trust but verify" policy from now on. The French have become clowns, rather than demons, in the eyes of most Americans.
