I saw Into the West, and loved it. That was quite a long time ago. I liked Irish movies when my child was growing up, because they were mostly fairly innocent, and I didn't have to worry too much about her watching them. As I recall, it was visually very beautiful.

I have two more recent Irish movies to recommend:

The Magdalene Sisters

In America

These are both out in the last couple years. The Magdalene Sisters is about the horrific work houses in Ireland for young girls who had sinned according to the whacked out community standards of mid-twentieth century Ireland. This movie is excellent, but some people might find it disturbing. It is easy to understand after watching it why Catholicism is dying so rapidly in Ireland right now. Last year, they could only find four young men who wanted to go into the priesthood in the whole country.

In America is a film about a young family of Irish immigrants in a scary New York neighborhood. It was inspired by director Jim Sheridan's loss of his brother when he was a child, and Sheridan's daughters helped write it. Very fine acting, and New York has never looked more vivid on film.
