Copy & pasted from Yahoo MRVC message board. Rumors were already circulating about a Nortel/Mrvc optical ethernet deal and now this. Sounds like MRVC's Optiswitch products if you ask me. Is an announcement on the horizon?

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Nortel Networks Inc. has expanded both the 6000 and 1000 families of the Optical Multiservice Edge product line, to offer customer-premises equipment (CPE) that aggregates both packet-based and native optical services. Both are intended for converged optical and Internet Protocol services, to eliminate the need for overlay networks at the edge of the public network.
The OME 6110 is an end-user extension to the OME 6500 carrier-based edge router. It is a single-rack unit that aggregates 16 E1 or DS1 service ports over an OC-3 (155 Mbits/s) line interface. The system has an open service slot that can be populated with optional line cards for 10/100-Mbit Ethernet, DS3/E3 support, OC-3/STM-1o services, or additional channels of E1 or DS1.
The OME 6110 supports a variety of traditional Sonet and data-oriented Sonet services. VC12/VT1.5, STS/VC-3, or VC-4 mapped services can be aggregated on the OC-3 interface. The system also supports Generic Framing Procedure, Virtual Concatenation, and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme methods for Ethernet transport over Sonet. The OME 6110 supports a variety of Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) optical interfaces, and can support single or protected network interfaces, including 1+1 and unidirectional path-switched rings.
The OME 1010/1030/1060 models are to be managed by service providers, in order to provision first-mile Ethernet services over fiber. The systems support many of the services defined by IEEE 802.3ah and Metro Ethernet Forum, including Ethernet Private Line, Ethernet Private LAN, Virtual Private Networks, and IPSec.
The family members differ in number of slots in the chassis " the OME 1010 has one slot, the OME 1030 has three slots, and the OME 1060 has 16 slots. The OME 1010 is strictly a customer-premises system, while the latter two models can be located in a central office or the basement of a multi-tenant/multi-dwelling unit, serving as aggregators to the OME 1010. The 1010 is managed by a configuration tool that runs through a management card in either the 1030 or 1060.
Like the 6110, the three new 1000 family members use SFP optics. An FX module allows scaling from 10 to 100 Mbits/s, while a GE module extends the bandwidth range from 10 to 1000 Mbits/s. |
