IMO That's because at that time there was no oil for food program where by the french Gov. benefited and at that time chirac did not have multi billion dollar deals with sadam for new oil feilds. Why do you think the french tried so hard with the help of the corrupt UN to stop the USA from removing sadam. And of course there is the love affair between sadam and chirac....appears chirac loved arafat deeply as well....nice friends this chirac guy has.
