True... he was nominally Sunni.

Of course, 'religious tolerance' is a relative term.

By most measures, Iraq had the most secular society of all the Arab states in the Middle East... and, while Saddam did turn the screws on the Shiia, he generally opposed with murderous violence ANY organized group that threatened his Dictatorship.

It seems that preservation of his dictatorial powers was a far more important goal for him then promoting any particular religious aims.
