Ann, my grandparents hailed from a Northern Clime. They wintered in Florida in the fifties, sixties and early seventies. When they first started roosting there, they hired a gardener. Their first gardener was black, as were the next few. Soon, the blacks were too dignified to take demeaning jobs like that. The niche was filled by Cuban immigrants. I have been told that Cubans no longer accept such demeaning work in the area. It was not the wages, it was not the employer, it was the perceived status and esteem of the job.

My brother has a company that employs some low wage employees. He has generally been able to offer good benefits. Many of the employees in the lower paid jobs are immigrants. They are not demeaned by taking such undignified work. Few Americans are willing to work in those jobs for more than a few months. The immigrants choose to decline the benefits, because they want the last dollar of their wages. They decline to participate in the 401k for the same reason.

I have worked for minimum wages in a laundry and in a restaurant. You have not enjoyed life to the fullest until you have worked around extreme heat when it is hot and humid. The experience of living with almost nothing has made me appreciate later experiences even more.

Wallmart has many employees with benefits, it also employes a lot of employees who choose to accept more flexible work schedules.
