There is a very interesting article in this week's New Yorker concerning the veil issue in France.

The position of women Muslims living in the West is incredibly complex. I'm not sure any one of us can capture all the details. They range, on one extreme, from their subjugation by fundamentalist males to liberated, modern women who are visually indistinguishable from any others, at the other.

The veil in France is the first shot in the cultural war between French-style militant secularism and the legions of rapidly growing disaffected Muslims in the teeming French cites.

French are weird. They'll simply not fight for things we consider worthwhile, but they'll rip each other up about maintaining their secular society.
