Mulling over this exchange I was reminded of an experience I had some years ago. The company I worked for appointed a CEO who happened to be a black man. The business section of the paper ran a story about the appointment with a picture. The CEO had his secretary make a Xerox copy of article and distribute it to all the employees. All you could see in the picture on the Xerox copy literally were two eyes and a smiling mouth.

I was appalled and amused and embarrassed and about 50 other unexplored emotions. There's no particular point to my story. It's just that at the time no one dared talk about it and I felt like telling someone.
