If caricatures aren't offensive, why did you get so offended?

Who said caricatures weren't offensive? Caricatures can be anywhere from mildly teasing to brutal. Sort of like a roast only with pen and paper instead of a bunch of biting speeches. Even at their mildest they are edgy. Easy to be offended by them.

The only point about the cartoon I made is that I didn't find it racist. My rationale was that the picture was consistent with the criteria for drawing caricatures, nothing different than what would have been drawn for someone of a different race.

There are two ways we can approach race. One is the color-blind approach. The other is to patronize minorities by spotting them a few strokes, assigning them a separate culture, talking PC, and dancing through a minefield of double entendres. There has been lots of discussion about that subject hereabouts. I thought most of the folks here subscribed to the treat-everyone-the same approach, as does the Prez. So now we are faced with a crowd favorite who happens to be black who ends up the subject of a political cartoon and folks are finding racism in it. Just like those victim-doting lefties do. <g>

What was my comment about smiling in the dark if not a caricature?

I took it as an accusation of racism. I wasn't offended--it's really hard to offend me. I was just pointing out my threshold of civil discourse. I was started that you of all people presented me with an occasion to do so.

My guess at what happened was that Condi fans were outraged that she hasn't been universally embraced in her new role and are reacting with scattershot complaints, including racism. Sort of the way the Kerry die-hards lashing out at Bible-toting dummies.

Personally, I find Condi very impressive. As a woman who was in the vanguard of the movement, I'm very proud of her. As for her race, I don't find that relevant, particularly since she doesn't seem to be self-conscious about it.
