I'm not really sure the makers of The Magdalene Sisters had an incredibly large ax to grind--I'm not sure because the movie is historically accurate. It is fictionalized in that it follows three characters through the ordeal of being imprisoned in a Catholic workhouse, but the fact is that in Ireland between the 1960's and 1990's over 3,000 girls were thus imprisoned and suffered horrible physical, sexual and psychic abuses at the hands of Irish priests and nuns. Many of them died, and all were very damaged.

The saddest thing about this situation is that most of the girls were sent there willingly by parents who were themselves deeply cowed by the Irish version of Catholicism. As the result, Catholicism is becoming less and less popular in Ireland. Schools and churches are closing, and there is a lot of anger as more and more sex abuse cases, horrific abuse in orphanages, and other tales come out.
