Tests find possible case of BSE

A possible second case of BSE or mad cow disease has been detected in the US, but agriculture department officials said yesterday that meat from the suspect animal had not entered the food chain.
They released few details and refused to say where the animal had been found, adding that it would be four to seven days before the case could be confirmed.

Livestock industry representatives said the delay would cause turmoil in the beef market.

The possible case comes 11 months after the US had its first incidence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Japan and other countries banned US beef after the earlier case.

The latest suspicions arose because of an inconclusive test result, officials said.

"The inconclusive result does not mean we have another case of BSE," said Andrea Morgan, an associate deputy administrator of the USDA's animal and plant health inspection service.

"It is important to note that this animal did not enter the food or feed chain," she said. Ms Morgan said initial efforts to trace the animal's origins had begun.

Alisa Harrison, a department spokeswoman, said the case involved one of thousands of "high-risk animals" subjected to new screening procedures that took effect from June 1, to address complaints that too few animals in the US were being tested.

BSE attacks an animal's nervous system. People who eat food contaminated with it can contract variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
