Canadian Prime Minister comes to realize he loves Big Brother

MP fired for Bush doll stunt
Sydney Morning Herald -- November 20, 2004

Ottawa: The Canadian Prime Minister, Paul Martin, has booted a vocal George Bush critic from the Liberal Party's parliamentary caucus - after she stomped on a Bush doll - further weakening his minority government's already tenuous grip on power.

The sacked MP, Carolyn Parrish, has embarrassed the Government on several occasions by using harsh words to describe the US President. She also told a reporter she didn't care if Mr Martin lost the next election and said his team "can all go to hell".

The move reduces the Liberal caucus to 134 in the 308-seat House of Commons and means that, for the first time since the June election, the combined opposition outnumbers the Liberals and their New Democrat allies.

Mr Martin sacked Ms Parrish on Thursday just a day after she was shown stomping on a George Bush doll as part of a televised comedy show.

"I told her that while I have defended her right to express her views frankly, I cannot - as leader of our party and the Government caucus - tolerate behaviour that demeans and disrespect others," Mr Martin told reporters.

"It is unacceptable. There are better, more civil and more effective ways to make your case than those she has chosen."

A Martin aide said the decision to fire Ms Parrish was prompted both by the doll incident and her comments that she did not care if the Liberals lost the next election. But the opposition Conservatives said Mr Martin - who had previously dismissed opposition demands to sack Ms Parrish - only acted after she attacked him.

The Liberals and the New Democrats now have a combined 153 members of the House of Commons, one less than half.

If Ms Parrish - who will now sit as an independent - sided with the opposition in a vote of confidence, she could bring down Mr Martin's government.
