The insurgents are playing off our declaration and intention to preserve religious sites if at all possible. They know we will pay a steep political price if we damage a mosque.

The problem is, this is self-inflicted and self-defined.

I think it is time for our strategists to rethink this policy, and start softening up the political costs that would be paid by judicious diplomacy.

The onus needs to be placed on the insurgents for exploiting this self-imposed limit on our strategy. THEY are the ones who are putting the mosques at risk, not the coalition forces.

Start calling a spade a spade. If guys with guns occupy a mosque, then it's a military base, not a mosque. Just remove the limiting definition, and act accordingly.

We will have to rebuild the whole place anyway. I don't see the problem with building a new mosque in Iraq, despite our First Amendment.

That would apply also to the off-site mosques where insurgent coordinators are planning their dirty work. They have a choice, behave as a religious institution or behave as a military base.

To me, it's a simple problem. We have great propaganda capability and expertise. Why else would Super Bowl ads be valued in millions of dollars per minute of exposure. Use some of that power to change people's minds about the military use of religious buildings.
