The dog and pony shows can probably give you some pretty bad signals. CEOs flat out say things like "we will have products" (still waiting, tgen). I still remember very clearly a Corixa slideshow, beautiful clear skin...and product failed. I can attend shows in Seattle, but haven't been for awhile. If only we had a few molecular biologist types around here...or a fellow with a sharp mind and a Harvard education to sniff out some leads. We are very lucky they indulge our enthusiasm, it has been a few years since I contributed anything but chit chat. Someday I hope to repay the SI community with a good lead.
