Abu Mazen to ask Powell to assist in release of Barghouti

Will outline request during visit of outgoing US secretary of state to region, slated to begin on Monday.

(my hopes of a new era are dashed - he refuses to retract incitement against Israel and now wants to release convicted terrorists)

PLO Chairman Mahmud Abbas (Abu Mazen) will ask outgoing US Secretary of State Collin Powell to act for the release of former Tanzim leader Marwan Barghouti, Palestinian sources have told the Kuwaiti News Agency.

According to the sources, Abu Mazen will outline his request during Powell’s visit to the region, which is slated to begin on Monday. The secretary will hold a series of meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

In addition to the request to free Barghouti, who is serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison, Abu Mazen is also expected to ask Powell to act for the release of Popular Front General Secretary Ahmed Sa’adat, who is incarcerated in a Jericho prison for his involvement in the assassination of former minister Rehavam Ze’evi.

It is estimated that Abu Mazen will make the requests in order to boost his support among the Palestinians ahead of the January 9 elections in the Palestinian Authority.
