Yes, under this STV proposal MLAs would to some extent be held accountable to ridings, but much lesser extent than now, as the ridings would be fewer and larger ... 'as few as two, as many as seven' members from a riding, so taking say three as an average, divide seventy-nine by three, you get twenty-six ridings only .... which may be enough, dunno, but it seems much less direct than one-per-riding

But you have to leave one-per-riding in some way, to get out of FPTP on the way to proportionality, i guess ...

In México the house of commons equivalent is forty per cent 'proportional', seats awarded from party lists according to proportion of popular vote ... so they keep sixty per cent representation from ridings .... it was the Verdes [green party] who most helped Fox oust the PRI, all Verdes were from prop-rep, so as far as that went it worked well .... following on though, there has been all sorts of frustration, backroom dealings where minority parties bargained for their interests .... there is overall less pressure to move politics to centre positions that are acceptable to the majority [in other words, 'piss off the maximum number of people to the minimum degree']
