You were talking about a subway platform. There are too many innocent people around to pull off a shot, unless you become and excellent marksman. The threat of using the gun, might make the attacker rethink his plan, but I don't know how the law would take the brandishing. You can't fire a warning shot, because of all the concrete around that would cause the bullet to bounce all over the place, and put innocents in danger. Even approaching the perp with empty hands could cause him to slice his victim.

IOW, it is not an easy decision to make. One would have to look at what could happen from every aspect.
