Well of course I do think the extreme right is extremely scary. I am scared every day. This morning I got up, took the dogs for a beautiful walk in their heavily forested, somewhere-in-a-blue-state neighborhood, where it was sunny but cold, and everything smelled of pine and wood burning in all the fireplaces. I had to be very careful not to slip on piles of wet leaves as the Golden Retriever, who is young and willful and not very good on his lead, dashed and smashed his way down the street wishing he could go after a cat or at least a squirrel. I noticed that the berries on the holly were big and red--here come the holidays--and did everything else to distract myself, but still the political situation breaks through my attempts not to think about it. Not even falling asleep last night listening to U2 sing on Saturday Night Live, or the attention I needed to pay to making pie dough for the pumpkin coming on Thursday, or chasing fresh cranberries all over the kitchen that broke out of their little flimsy clear plastic box, were enough of living in the present to keep the political ugliness from rearing up and distressing me. And I am even wearing my tie-dye apron . . . nothing helps enough . . .
