My personal observation has been that Bushies in general and neocons in particular are primarily motivated by fear, anger, and hate. In recent weeks I have had to modify this and add greed to the list, as I've had discussions with few who talk about the necessity of preserving "our way of life" by which they mean we should send marines to pillage foreign lands and resources as a matter of life and death.

I've seen several scientific studies that seem to corroborate my unscientific observation. The latest is in the current issue of Scientific American's MIND On page 7 it cites a Rutgers University psychology study in which participants were asked to think about death OR events of Sept 11 were more likely to respond favorably to a passage praising George Bush. I've seen other studies (using more concrete fMRI measurements) that showed Bush supporters were more sensitive to the negative emotions I mentioned.

BTW, page 22 has an interesting article on how group-think makes killers.

The magazine is worth its money.
