The British and most other European governments seem to disagree with you. So does the US government, at least as far as alien visitors, who must have a biometric passport to enter the US, or else be photographed and fingerprinted as they enter the US.

Why are you afraid of your democratically elected government issuing an ID to you that can't be counterfeited? Don't you already have a driver's license? How about a social security number? Don't you know that the government already knows everything it needs to know about you via your tax returns and social security number? You must know that a myriad of commercial entities know a LOT about you from where you live to your detailed credit history, unless you have recently arrived from Mars. Are you aware that a record is made and probably kept every time you buy anything or even surf to a web site? Do you know that everything you send via e-mail, including these posts, is scrutinized by powerful government computers?

The only people that ought to be afraid of a national ID are criminals, illegal aliens and terrorists.
