UW, you have convinced me that I don't know all the facts. I think I will be silent on the matter from here on.

This is the essence of what I remember from my level II training, which I took because we were often the only guys out in the woods when people were stealing firewood and such: They would also make sure their teammates could maintain an open field of fire...there would be no straight lines between a teammate, a bad guy and me.

It was a bit foreign to me, because unlike you my encounters with people in the woods have been with basically law-abiding folks. That's why I got killed (in my training exercises) because I couldn't make the transition from talking to a friendly guy who happened to have a gun and that same guy going for the gun to shoot me. I mean, I've camped with a pistol since I was about twelve. I wouldn't want some guy with a badge shooting me while I toasted my shins on my own campfire.

Have you read "In The Gravest Extreme?" One valid response depicted in that book was to run like hell. Ayoob also cautions that the successful use of lethal force is likely to haunt you for the rest of your life, justified or not.

I think our Southeast Asian immigrants have a great deal going for them, and I certainly hope that this tragic incident does not lead to more tragedy. We need such citizens in this country. I dealt with some of them as a part time real estate agent. They are very industrious and put most of us to shame. Many now own convenience stores and other such enterprises. In fact, my own "town" such at it is has a gas/convenience store owned by an Asian couple. They are very nice.

I think you are being a little hard on the people who raced to the scene of the tragedy not prepared to wage war on the fellow in the tree. They were probably like me, not expecting a hostile action like that. Did they roar in on ATVs? I am not too keen on those. Just my opinion.

BTW, my cousin was a Green Beret. A medic, I think.
