Henry, I suppose there is some purpose to creating a population-reducing human killer. But from your description, I don't understand what it is.

We know that killer influenzas can exist and have existed and have done catastrophic damage. So they aren't going to show that there really is something to worry about.

Nor are they going to enable a vaccine because there are swarms of influenza types and the recombination which ends up being the first attack on humans is not going to be the one they come up with.

It seems to me that all they are doing is playing with fire.

Yes, they will assure us that nothing can go wrong. They have double locked triple security guarded air-locks with highly trained CIA approved top-notch experts supervising the top-notch scientists who will with the utmost rigour manage the experiments.

They should watch some Simpsons episodes or simply real life and read up on the Law of Unintended Consequences.

Remember the guy who accidentally let smallpox out of the lab? He killed himself, but in fact the disease didn't get far.

How do we know that these CDC aces aren't going to make a little oops-a-daisy and the bug escapes into the wild?

A lot of people are a bit nervous about Iran and North Korea fiddling around with fissionable uranium. Many are worried about Al Qaeda. Meanwhile, some clowns are going to invent the equivalent of bubonic plague for no purpose that I can see.

Why do they need to do it?
