Do you feel Shields has a confrontational or bellicose "posture"? I've been reading Brooks regularly since he joined the Times but, until you asked, I didn't even know that Shields wrote a column so I'm not qualified to respond to your question. I just googled a few of his recent columns but that's not enough for be to get a sense of the guy. I didn't find anything in what I read to indicate that he adopts a role parallel to that of Brooks in his Times columns. Unlike Brooks, he seems to be writing to a liberal audience from a liberal POV. Didn't find anything shrill in what I read.
