I just googled a few of his recent columns.

Ever seen Shields on PBS with Brooks? He also has a round table program on CNN on Saturdays but I can't recall the name of it.

Not sure how his style could be described... mostly sullen and definitely bitter. He certainly doesn't deserve a spot on Lehrer.

The contrast with Brooks works well though - Brooks is always polite (to the point of looking like a weakling at times) taking Shield's veiled insults.

A perfect contrast of the conduct and styles for the "glance over" crowd (if you're a conservative). The Shields/Carville/Begaala/Moore/McCauliffe/Clift types as spokespeople were probably worth millions of votes for Bush.

Whereas Brooks and Safire always are polite and eloquent - never surly (on TV)... Novak will sometimes give it back... and he is definitely surly.
