Steven Roach: What exactly is the corporate purpose of Steven Roach for Morgan Stanley? Not to be too cynical here, but I doubt many Morgan Stanley clients are investing their money in accordance with Roach's bearish view. Or does he help them sell puts and get clients to short? Maybe Roach is supposed to immunize Morgan Stanley against possible repercussions from employing people like Mary Meeker? Or Roach is just intended to create some publicity and buzz for Morgan Stanley? And where does Roach get his gravitas? Just from being chief economist at Morgan Stanley, or did he have gravitas before that? Not trying to disparage Roach (although he is a bit painful to read) - just find it a bit incongruous that this hyper-bear is the chief economist of a major investment bank (or whatever Morgan Stanley calls itself).
