It seems to me that people who are genuinely more concerned with the plight of deer than with enjoying the pagan pleasure of hunting them down would be very much in support of the deer birth control method of controlling deer populations that have been discussed at Feelies in the last couple of days.

The problem I have with a deer birth control program is that it just creates more government.

At present we have a system where herd control is maintained by the states' determining how many deer should be taken to keep the population in check. Private herd management technicians, a/k/a "hunters", pay for the privilege of participating in the program to keep the herds in check. I suspect that the program, as it exists now, pays for itself.

Now think about replacing the program with a government-sponsored program to get birth control meds to all these over-sexed deer. Keep in mind that many deer like to live in remote locations. How do you administer that program, and pay for it, without creating a huge new government agency?

I suggest that if this is something you are interested in, you might want to consider establishing a nonprofit to do feasibility studies and to solicit donations. Like minded individuals could contribute money to help the cause of keeping these over-sexed cloven hoofed babes from reproducing. I'm sure you'll be able to raise a couple thousand dollars, at least.

IOW, put your money where your mouth is.
