a major top, followed by a brutal bear market. i'm not saying this has to be similar ( btw., since Earl asked about the 'energy situation' in 74, it was even worse than today's - crude oil had just made an explosive move higher ) , but a comparison of the charts is frightening. they look exactly the same ( use the Barron's gold mining index to represent the HUI in '74 ) . gold made a new high in late '74 far above the previous high ( 200 vs. 160 ) and the gold stock indices made a lower high - in a chart pattern that looks exactly like the '04 pattern.
of course this isn't a guarantee of the same outcome. it merely is a heads-up to remain careful.
