Hi twfowler

I have owned a number of guns, although no small handguns. The only one I still own is an SAR-48, which is a cheaper version of the very nice FN-FAL. It has enough bumps and protrubances that an additional one for a video system could be easily accommodated.

As far as defeating the system, yes, smart capable people can through a number of means. However a smart capable person could make a gun from scratch along with the ammo. So what? The point is: can a system that does not cost too much be put in place to reduce gun related violence? I say yes, except for the political aspect which I believe is absolutely no-go in the USA for the forseeable future. Note that the system could be something like a GPS position recorder and 360 deg video collar worn by the gun handler with an electronic trigger interlock (wireless) which simply requires the system be logging data to enable the gun. The manner is which the data is transferred to enforcement agencies and tied into ammunition (reloading supply) purchases is easily solvable with reasonable reliability. It will not be foolproof. So what! Few safety systems are.

We are at $200B+ due to 9/11 (3k lives) but somehow 20K+ lives/year seams to slip by with many arguments about why inaction is the preferable approach. This is what I call an order of magnitude problem. Perhaps it is just a distributed problem though, the 3K happened in one swoop, but the 20K/yr go in ones and twos, so no big deal to most people.

A great sci-fi story could be written about a smarter Osama, who uses deep moles in the USA to kill 3K/yr through what looks like random gun violence, and the nation sleeps on... No terror glory in it, but the mastermind has a plan! Heck, I'd buy the book.
