>> a quick SNDK/WDC comparative analysis.
Sam, the first thing about SNDK/WDC comparison is obviously the industries.
They are both in commodity business. However, the disk drive business is in the last throes of consolidation, whereas SanDisk is in a technologically unstable industry (meaning advancing very rapidly).
So now success in the drive business demands correct business decisions, logistics, labor relations, motivation, etc... (vs scientific research). However, in the memory business, it is all about equipment, research, chip design and those sort of things.
WDC's management are masters at the business game. And so they are surviving.
I don't know whether SanDisk can outshine the likes of Intel, AMD, Samsung, etc....
Also, it is very difficult to have insight into the "during the quarter" pace of business for SNDK. By contrast, it is easy to tell how how WDC (or the major drive companies) are doing. All I have to do is browse the on-line stores for drive prices.
I guess I really don't know how to get an advantage with sndk. They have a lot of business with OEM's. And most of them do not report their flash consumption. In contrast, every PC has a disk drive. So if you follow PC sales (which are reported widely and frequently), you know exactly how many disk drives are sold.
I think AMD would be a more manageable speculation. Just because PC sales are widely reported.
