Re: If Bush had made it clear to me he was on a "mission from god" back when he was running against Al Gore, he never would have had my support.

The warnings were out there: Shrub : The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush by MOLLY IVINS

tinyurl.com

I tried very hard to get anyone who would listen to pay attention. Molly very intelligently suggested that there are only three things that matters when looking at a candidate, the record, the record and the record.

And Bush's record as the Governor of Texas would have told the world exactly what to expect from Bush the President. That is to say, they could expect nasty treatment for anyone who wasn't born with a silver coke spoon in their nose, indiscriminate trashing of sensible environmental laws, excessive secrecy and unbridled cruelty wrapped up in a born-again enchilada of disinformation and dirty politics.

But would the American public listen to such truths? Nope. Not your average Republican. These turkeys make the No-Nothing Party of the 1830s look absolutely enlightened. Sheesh.

What can we say about America's experiment in democracy? Well two things.

1) It's taken us 240 years to finally wreck what the Founding Fathers intended to create, but we've done a hell of job of it recently.

2) "Democracy is the theory that the common man knows exactly what he wants and deserves to get it....... good and hard."

That last observation was made by H.L. Mencken. A man who knew a thing or two about America.

In 1920 he observed: "As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
