Funny that statement you made. America thinks Canada is their closest ally. Maybe, maybe not. But one thing is clear, if they are best of friends is that Canada acts as a restraint to the USA by acting as their conscience and has an important role as peacekeepers around the world which should not be compromised by towing the party line in Washington, no matter who is in power there.

Here's something to think about, an observation....

With the blatant example of Singapore, which is on the equator, the countries in the world which are furthest north in the northern hemisphere and the countries furthest south in the southern hemisphere are the countries with the most intelligent populations and the ones with a better quality of life in general. Think about this.
