There are many people of faith who do not follow those extreme beliefs - I am one of those people. Ironically some of the older Christian churches are now the best sanctuaries for tolerance and are among the more progressive and modern. The newest crop churches which have been building up steam over the past several decades - led and peopled by fundamentalism driven literalists - are among the most regressive. I simply do not understand how the fundamentalist evangelicals who use God's name to justify our crimes against humanity live with their conscience. That makes them no different than the religious extremists who attack us. If there is a difference between our extremists and foreign extremists its that our extremists can do their work by remote control and don't have to get their own hands dirty except to show up at the ballot box.
