Rational Explications - Michael Crichton takes on Dan Rather, Al Gore, and the U.N.

An internet rumor about Michael Crichton's new novel, State of Fear:

From global warming to Y2K, the American public has become increasingly susceptible to chains of speculation perpetuating bad science and hysteria.

From this, breeds a perception, exploited by the media, that nothing is in fact knowable for sure. When a genuine international disaster is brought to the attention of the public, the only chance of human survival is in the truth.

But, from unfounded conjectures and the self-perpetuating obscurity of fact, comes a world threat that is fed by public hysteria. The world’s biggest threat is not as it seems.

It’s true origin is in panic itself, and the state of fear.

Another:

George Morton is about to uncover an unbelievable conspiracy. In order to get the media's attention on the upcoming climate conference the environmental organization NERF takes sides with eco-terrorists. They have prepared a series of ecological catastrophies...

It's seems a good bet that these rumor are accurate. Transcripts of recent Crichton speeches read like Cato Institute briefings on "junk science". It will be interesting to see how this novel is received by the liberal establishment. Kudos to Crichton for making these guys into the true villains they are.
