I think you mean they are the peoples who have had to learn to alter their surroundings, move around, battled elements, kill food, etc??? I guess you could argue that ability makes them "smarter"? Or maybe that's your view of 'smart'? Certain cultures might call that 'clever' or even dangerous.

Better quality of life? Well that's subjective I'd say... how about using a benchmark of "being happy", still think those peoples are better off? I think one could argue that their "success" [viewed in a conventional manner by yardsticks of those peoples] is precisely due to their historic lot in life and their overall, inbread, anxious need to do SOMETHING.
