..........But the worries appear overblown. Patent applicant Brent Townshend,
a consulting professor at Stanford University, said he expects to
release a licensing policy within a week or so. Already, 3Com
Corp. (COMS), the manufacturer of the x2 modem, is a licensee.

Townshend told Dow Jones that he and 3Com would act as a "single
entity" to license the patent to other modem and modem-chip makers.

He said the arrangement would be a "reasonable," fixed-price
licensing agreement, but declined to provide additional details.
Such arrangements are common in the industry.
