he country has drifted from its idealistic beginnings. The US is closer to its idealistic beginnings than at any point in the past IMO. Certainly its closer to those ideals than in the days of slavery. Or prior to the extension of civil rights to racial minorities.

And seeking to spread democracy into the benighted Middle East is certainly not a bad thing vis a vis American ideals. One can argue it is too monumental a task, I think, but not that the goal is contrary to our values.

The Taliban, Saddam Hussein, the Iranian mullahs, and the human sacrificers of Al Qaida and its various sub-groups are about the most villainous folks around since Hitler, Stalin and Mao left this mortal coil. As much as you'd like to paint the US as the greatest villain in the world today, it just isn't so.
