You are such an alarmist -- nothing wrong with that -- but perhaps on the wrong topics. Anyway...

The "Bryd Amendment" is a noxious piece of legislation put in place by a protectionist Congress. World trade agreements and processes are in place for a reason; they've found this amendment to be counter to international trade law and it will be disposed of in due course.

The president is always held hostage to re-election concerns of his party; its time for Bush to use some of that "mandate" to correct some issues that threaten international trading relationships.

As for stock piles of resources - I'll speak only to oil -- if foreign oil were ever to be cut off -- all foreign oil, including Canada's -- there'd be some people freezing to death in short order; a repeat of 1970's OPEC inspired shortages -- and depending on how long the outage went on for, economic crisis.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve isn't large enough nor will it ever be to carry the US through an extended period of total economic isolation. Fortunately any scenario whereby this could come about is pretty far fetched. Its more likely that the US would adapt its policies rather than go down this road.
