The latter is the Russian version. Ukraine was independent for many years now, but old habits persist.

Thanks for your remarks and the info. It appears that Russia would like to avoid seeing Ukraine go pro-Western, and maybe NATO and EU -- but this should be up to the Ukrainian people to decide.

I don't know those parts too well, but I have been to Kiev a couple of times, and once even traveled from Georgia to Crimea on a small ship. The views, and the deep blue of the Black sea were unforgettable!
