The dollar back then was not the dollar today. Since that date a huge monetary expansion has taken place. Furthermore, the hyper US consumption has moved a lot of these $$ outside the USA making it even more a global currency than back in the late 1980's.

I am guessing that the correlation improved as the US dollar became the king currency of the world.
