The Island is a non proprietary system where NASDAQ orders go that are either not filled within the required MM time limit which means that they are either for over 1000 shares(which means that they cannot be filled by using SOES) or they are a limit order that is off the spread. Both Selectnet and Instinet the Island are nonproprietary order execution systems. Market Makers place unfilled orders here and try to match them with other unfilled orders. Traffic on the island will show you mostly what real buyers are doing and/or willing to do. SOES is dominated by MM trading. Placing a market order will usually get you filled through SOES. If your order is over 1000 shares, then it will fill in increments to fit the size of the SOES order limits. This can be in increments of either 100,500 or 1000. If your order is over 1000 shares, and not more then 1 MM executes your order through SOES by breaking it down, then you will often get a partial fill and if the spread moves outside your order the remaining unfilled shares will end up on the island. I hope this clears up any questions anyone might have.

Thanks

Dug
