“end of the road” is how I always describe it to people who ask where it is. Pity that they can’t keep the mill going, guess I will always have an affinity for the place and area. I seem to remember 1905 on some the concrete footings. I was always amazed at the timber we pushed onto to that chain into the wood plant. It could take up to six foot in the butt, mammoth logs. If they were short of chips we would open up a pen of boomsitcks and chip ‘em….unreal. Yep, no cedar, spruce allowed only for certain grades of pulp, millions of tons of hemlock. Booming was good work.
It was boom times when I first lived there, Island Copper going full steam, the mill, all the logging camps were doing their thing, there was a decent sized fishing fleet in Hardy I believe. Guys were there from all over the continent. I got my eyes opened in a hurry. I got a lifetime of stories to bore everyone with from those characters. Romantic guy that I am I took the wife there for our honeymoon. In my defense the destination was San Josef Bay.
Tackler has found and interesting company looking to do some business up there. seabreezepower.com Knob Hill would be a rugged area to build a wind farm, travelled through on the way to Cape Scott several times, can’t say as I noticed any more wind there than anywhere else. I wonder if the power infrastructure from the mine is still in place?
Thank goodness it had such a wretched climate or I still might be there. Nah I felt too hemmed in by the clouds and hills, found out there was something to this being an Albertan-blue sky, wide open spaces and all that.
Coal and yellowcake have been very good to me this year. I found the guys on iHub most helpful. I even anted up for the outfit.
